Impressions of classmates' use of media
Common Trends:
I found that the vast majority of students in the class used the following types of media:
- Smart phones
- Television
- Computers
Basically everyone had the same devices; the real differences came into how they used them.
-Smart phones: A large group of students use their phones for texting (although some do not), many use game apps or GPS, many use the internet or email services. A very small number of students actually call people with their phones. This was a little weird for me because I call people on a daily basis; I think this stems from me growing up overseas and having a cellphone plan where calling was much more affordable than texting.
- Television: Nearly everyone mentioned they watched television which I expected. What I was surprised about was how nearly everyone watched shows from at least two distinct genres. I expected more people who simply picked a single genre that they liked. Additionally, a lot of people mentioned using television streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu; people seem to be shifting away from traditional television and will watch things online later.
- Computers: As computer science majors I obviously expected a lot of computer use, but I was surprised by the diversity of uses. There were emails, homework, video games, websites like Reddit, social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, streaming television/movies, watching YouTube videos and vines were some of the more common responses.
Less common types of media:
- Radio
- Movies (this was surprising)
- Gaming systems (I expected more)
Users most like me:
Keleigh Maddox - All around similarities, similar levels of television and social media
Joanne N Bruno - Similar amounts of games, television, and websites.
Users least like me:
Tom Coladonato - Much more gaming, fewer social media/connections
Zach Cannon - Some similarities, but he doesn't use Facebook ever whereas I am on multiple times each day
